How to Calculate How Many Pavers You Need

Planning a paver patio or walkway starts with one simple question: how many pavers should you buy? The answer comes from project area, paver coverage, the installation pattern, and a realistic allowance for cuts and breakage.

Our guides explain the formulas behind the calculators so you can check the result yourself and adapt the assumptions to your project.

1. Measure the project area

For a rectangular patio, measure length and width in feet and multiply them. A 20 × 20 ft patio is 400 sq ft. For an L-shaped or irregular space, split the area into rectangles, calculate each section, and add them.

2. Calculate the area of one paver

If a paver is 12 × 12 inches, it covers 1 sq ft before joints. For a 4 × 8 inch paver, multiply 4 × 8 and divide by 144 to get about 0.22 sq ft per piece. Use the actual product dimensions when possible.

3. Divide project area by paver coverage

Divide the project square footage by the coverage of one paver. For a 400 sq ft patio using a 12 × 12 inch paver, the base quantity is 400 pieces before waste.

4. Add waste for cuts and breakage

A simple straight layout may need only a modest allowance. Diagonal, herringbone, curved, or heavily bordered designs can require more. Add the allowance after calculating the base quantity, then round up to whole pieces or the supplier’s full package.

5. Estimate base and bedding sand separately

Pavers sit on a prepared base, not directly on soil. Calculate the base volume from area × compacted depth, then calculate the bedding layer separately. Confirm the required depths for your soil, climate, traffic, drainage, and chosen installation system.

Worked example

Suppose the patio is 400 sq ft and the paver is 12 × 12 inches. With 10% waste, the planning quantity is 440 pavers. If your product is sold by pallet coverage instead of individual pieces, convert the 440-piece result into the supplier’s pallet or package quantity.

Use the calculator

Our Paver Calculator combines the area, paver dimensions, waste allowance, base depth assumption, and bedding layer into one planning result. Replace the defaults with your actual product and project specification before ordering.

Use the calculator: Measurements and product specifications vary. Verify the final quantity with the supplier or manufacturer before placing a large order.
